Pod2g now running iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak on iPad 3

We have been waiting for quite some time to hear some good news of an iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak. Well, we do not have to wait any longer! Just last week we told you about Pod2g’s announcement that he finally managed to jailbreak his iPhone 4 running on iOS 5.1 using an untethered jailbreak. He surely did have us sitting on the fence for more.

The New iPad Jailbroken, jailbroken iPad 3 5.1

Well it seems like Pod2g is getting luckier by the minute! Just a while ago Pod2g brought great news to third generation iPad users. Yes! Pod2g did it once again! He managed to jailbreak his new iPad running on iOS 5.1 untethered! The exact words he tweeted were:

ipad 3, ios 5.1 untethered jailbreak, pod2g

“Hey. iPad 3,1 running iOS 5.1 untethered. Next on the list: stabilizing the payload, then trying 5.1.1.”

Even though Apple released an update to iOS 5.1, meaning that the latest iOS released is now iOS 5.1.1 not iOS 5.1, it is still good news that Pod2g managed to figure out an untethered jailbreak. If he keeps working this hard (and with his luck of course) we do not doubt that we will hear very soon some very similar good news for the latest operating system iOS 5.1.1!

There is no doubt that the competition between developers on discovering the exploits for the untethered jailbreak is very fierce. We’ll see who will be the lucky developer to carve his name on iOS 5.1.1. Stay tuned for more.

The New iPhone 5 Is Coming On September & The 7-Inch iPad Will Hit The Market On August (Rumor)

According to rumors and reports from sources like DigitTimes, Pegatron and Foxconn it seems that The New iPad (iPad 3) which has been the talk of every old and young for about months now was just one of the feathers in Apple’s fruit company’s cap! If you haven’t heard the name DigiTimes before let me introduce you to the Asian trade publication company that has its eyes focused on Apple’s news and upcoming products. Although DigiTimes doesn’t always hit the right target when it comes to Apple’s news and usually its reports just turn out to be plain rumors, today’s report by DigiTimes is definitely worth our reading out loud.

iPhone 5 Liquidmetal concept

Today, DigiTimes has rung a few more bells and whistles by reporting that Apple is working on an iPad of 7-inches that’s to be launched on August together with the long waited for iPhone 5 which is supposed to be available on September. Hold tight before you think the report is over and wait to hear this, DigiTimes also says that a new 10-Inches iPad is also on Apple’s plan list for the next generation tablet industry development.

Here’s DigiTimes report :

To mainly focus on Apple’s orders, Pegatron has also internally decided to downsize its SI motherboard department and to shift resources to Apple’s orders. Since Asustek has been reducing its motherboard orders to Pegatron, while gross margins are also rather low, the shifting in resources is expected to benefit Pegatron in its operations, the sources noted.

Perhaps Pegatron Technology did announce their plans to surprise the market with both an iPhone 5 and a new 10-inches iPad later this year, however, I’m not completely sold on the idea that Apple is planning to release a new tablet with the New iPad being only available for less than 2 months now and it didn’t even reach the whole world yet! What’s more is the fact that a few months is not an enough time for the New iPad to be compared with a newer tablet.

Who knows what might Apple be thinking and what other rumors we might be getting whether from DigiTimes or other publication trade companies? All in all, we’ll keep on the trails of the iPhone 5, 7-Inches iPad and 10-Inches iPad rumors until Apple reveals the truth of these rumors.

Major Cyberlocker Movie Pirate Faces 5 Years In Prison

Later this month an individual who allegedly uploaded thousands of movies and TV shows to cyberlocker services will face trial and a possible 5 year prison sentence. The 29-year-old, who was also the moderator of a warez forum, committed the alleged infringements over a period of more than 4 years. The movie industry claims he cost them nearly $4.2m but the Pirate Party reject the damages calculations as “simply ridiculous.”

Online he was known as “Stainless” and according to the MPA-affiliated anti-piracy group chasing him down, he was

the will become the most prolific movie and TV show Internet pirate ever to face trial in the Czech Republic.

Later this month the now 29-year-old will go to court to face charges of copyright infringement on Hollywood blockbusters such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

According to the Anti-Piracy Union, the piracy activities of Stainless date back to 2006 and are on an unprecedented scale. He allegedly uploaded thousands of movies and TV shows to cyberlocker file-hosting sites before publishing their links online in order to facilitate downloads.

Initially Stainless is reported to have used RapidShare and Hotfile, but later used a web service called Multiload to upload to several sites at once. One of the main sites listed by Multiload is Hellshare and Stainless reportedly had around 11,500 files stored there. Exactly how many of those were infringing is unclear.

Nevertheless, Stainless still stands accused of significant infringement. He is alleged to be responsible for the piracy of more than 2000 movie and TV shows including Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and a selection of local movies. Not helping Stainless’ case is the fact he was the moderator of so-called ‘warez’ forum.

As is increasingly common in these cases, the damages claim made by the studios is significant. They claim that Stainless cost them more than $4 million and as a result when he goes on trial later this month he will face between six months and five years in prison, plus a fine.

“The way they estimated the damages is simply ridiculous,” Mikulas Ferjencik, vice-president of the Czech Pirate Party told TorrentFreak.

“The Czech Pirate Party believes that it should be up to the copyright monopoly owners to prove that they were actually damaged by downloads. We think that the current setup, where copyright monopoly owners receive the ‘average market price’ multiplied by three, is unconstitutional.”

The Czech Pirate Party, know for their provocative actions including setting up their own file-sharing sites, have courted controversy again recently.

In setting up their new web portal located at Pirat.cz, they blatantly copied the design of the Czech Republic’s biggest search engine, Seznam.cz, fueling a considerable online debate and an interesting outcome.

“Seznam.cz admitted that what we did is actually fully legal and they even drew another version of the Piráti.cz logo for us using their font – the one we originally used was just an imitation,” Ferjencik concludes.

Clinton visit: US wants oil-thirsty India away from Iran

US secretary of state Hillary Clinton waves upon her arrival at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. AFP/Dibyangshu Sarkar

Urging India to reduce the oil it imports from Iran tops US secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton’s agenda as she starts two days of talks with Indian officials.

India has huge energy needs to fuel its rapid growth but has made some progress in easing its dependence on Iranian oil. Asenior official traveling with Clinton in Asia said the United States wants to see more.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to preview Clinton’s private discussions in Kolkata and New Delhi, said the “trend lines are good” but “we really need to receive assurances that they are going to continue to make good progress.”

Clinton arrived in Kolkata on Sunday after visits to China and Bangladesh.

The official said India had recently stepped up imports of oil from Saudi Arabia to make up for the reduction in Iranian oil and that the US was eager to see the Indians explore other alternatives.

India and Iran reached a deal earlier this year that would allow India to pay for about 45 percent its Iranian oil purchases in rupees. Iran would then use the Indian currency to buy goods from India.

International economic sanctions on Iran had made oil trade difficult, because Indian oil importers had to scramble to find banks willing to handle transactions with Tehran.

The barter exchange would help India pay for the Iranian crude without resorting to dollar payments, thus bypassing international banks.

An Indian delegation visited Iran in March to promote Indian goods including machinery, iron, steel, minerals and automobiles.

Clinton’s visit coincides with that of a large Iranian group that will be in New Delhi to explore Indian goods and services Tehran can buy to offset the enormous rupee payments running into billions of dollars that Iran has accumulated.

India has been pushing its oil companies to cut back their crude imports from Iran in order to be among the next set of countries to be granted a sanctions waiver that Washington is expected to announce in June.

Like other major consumers of Iranian oil, India could face US sanctions by the end of June if the Obama administration determines it has not made significant cuts in imports under a law aimed at squeezing Iran’s petroleum industry to press the country to comply with international demands over its nuclear program.

A dozen European nations and Japan have already been spared from those sanctions after the administration determined they had substantially reduced their Iranian oil imports. India, along with China, South Korea, Turkey and South Africa have still not received such waivers.

The US special envoy for global energy issues, Carlos Pasqual, will visit India later in May to follow up on Clinton’s talks, the official said.

Because of its energy needs, India has bristled at US calls to seek alternatives to cheap Iranian oil. The official said the Indian parliament is especially resistant to comply with demands from Washington on Iran.

After visiting Kolkata, India’s major eastern city, Clinton will travel on Monday to New Delhi.

The US official downplayed the presence of the Iranian delegation, which he said was centered on consumer goods.

“I don’t think we are too concerned about it,” he said.

In her talks with Indian officials, Clinton will also be pressing for the country to continue economic reforms and trade liberalization, including dropping restrictions on foreign investment in the finance sector and allowing large western retailers to open up, the official said.

Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone unveiled

Samsung phones

Samsung has unveiled its latest flagship smartphone – the Galaxy S3.

The handset has a 4.8 inch (12.2cm) screen, an increase on the 4.3 inch screen of its predecessor.

The device is perceived to be critical to how people view both Samsung’s brand and the Android system it runs.

Analysts say the popularity of the previous Galaxy – the S2 – was a major factor in the firm overtaking Nokia to become the world’s best-selling mobile phone maker.

Samsung said that the new Super Amoled (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) display was 22% larger than its predecessor, but the actual device was not much wider since it had shrunk the size of the bezel.

The development allows Samsung to boast it has a slightly larger screen than the 4.7 inch dimensions of the HTC One X, the top of the range model from its Taiwanese rival.

Rory Cellan-Jones and CCS Insight’s Ben Wood assess the new Galaxy phone

It is also significantly bigger than the 3.5 inch display of Apple’s iPhone 4S and the 4.3 inch screen of Nokia’s Lumia 900.

Samsung may have been influenced by the popularity of its phone/tablet hybrid, the Galaxy Note, which has an even bigger screen and has proved to be more popular than many industry watchers had forecast.

Eye recognition

The South Korean firm said that a mix of “intelligent camera features” and face recognition technology should also offer owners a more natural experience.

For example, it said that the front camera would identify the user’s eyes and would not go dark or lock so long as they were looking at it.

Other features on the S3 include an 8 megapixel camera on the rear, and a 1.9 megapixel front camera for video calls.

The phone also uses what is described as a “natural language user interface” dubbed S Voice. The South Korean company said it was a major improvement on the voice control features it included on earlier models.

Samsung Galaxy S3 being tested

The phone offers up to 64GB of internal memory and an SD slot to add more

“It is more like a good friend and listens intently and responds effectively to you,” a spokesman said at the launch event in London.

The facility can be used to command the phone to play songs, adjust the volume, send texts or emails and take photographs.

The function is likely to be compared to Apple’s Siri software.

Europe first

One expert attending the launch event said that the advances Samsung had made should help Google’s Android continue to be the most used smartphone operating system.

“The importance of the Galaxy S3 to Samsung cannot be underestimated,” said Adam Leach, principal analyst at Ovum.

“The company has built its reputation on producing the ‘must-have’ Android smartphone and in the process has become the poster child for the Android platform.

“However, Samsung’s Galaxy S3 not only needs to stand out amongst a plethora of other Android-based smartphones, it will also go head-to-head with the next iteration of Apple’s flagship smartphone, the iPhone.”

Mr Leach added that Apple was not expected to release its new handset until much closer to the end of the year.

The S3 will be available in two colours, pebble blue and marble white, and the firm says that other options will be available at a later date.

Not everyone at the launch was convinced by the design.

“It is not an eye-catching device that will overwhelm consumers,” said Francisco Jeronimo, European mobile devices research manager for IDC.

“It is a bit of a facelift of the Galaxy Nexus. It feels less ‘plasticky’ though.”

The new handsets will be available from the end of May in Europe. Launches in Asia, the Middle East and Africa will follow.

A 4G version will go on sale in the US and South Korea in the summer.

Government broadband plans face £1bn funding shortfall

A £1.1bn funding gap means the government’s targets for broadband are unlikely to be met, says a report by the London School of Economics.

The government wants 100% access to fast broadband services and 90% access to superfast services by 2015.

The report says the government should do more to ensure that underinvestment does not harm the UK economy.

A rise in broadband penetration of 10% can lead to a 0.9%-1.5% boost in GDP per capita, the report adds.

The cost of meeting the targets will be £2.4bn but funding for broadband from all public sources amounts to a total of £1.3bn, according to the LSE report, which was sponsored by customer management software company Convergys. That leaves an estimated £1.1bn gap that private investors will be expected to fill, it says.

“The government target of 100% coverage by basic broadband by 2015 is likely to be met, but it is less clear when the government targets of 90% coverage by superfast broadband, and 100% coverage by fast broadband, are likely to be met,” the report says.

The LSE defines “basic” broadband as services offering speeds of up to 2Mbps. “Fast” broadband ranges from 2Mbps to 24Mbps, and “superfast” exceeds 24Mbps.

Paolo Dini, one of the report’s authors, said the government should spend more on broadband given the economic benefits it could bring.

“In this year’s budget the government allocated £200bn for transport infrastructure and £50m to broadband. That doesn’t seem quite right.”

But a spokesman for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport denied the targets were likely to be missed.

“We are confident of completing the roll-out by 2015. All local authorities except two met the government’s timeline by submitting their initial broadband plans on time,” he said.

“We have always been clear this investment will not meet the full cost but will help make it economically viable for telecoms companies to roll out broadband to areas that would otherwise be left behind.”

Big spender

Oliver Johnson, chief executive of Point Topic, a broadband research company, said the report’s figures matched his own estimates for broadband spending: “There is definitely a funding gap. It’s unlikely that the targets will be met.”

But he said that the UK was spending a significant amount on broadband compared with other European countries.

“The UK is in the top two or three in terms of central spend and commitment to achieve comprehensive coverage. We are actually not doing too badly, although the whole of the western hemisphere lags behind Asia in this regard.”

The UK comes 17th in a global ranking of broadband penetration – the number of broadband lines per 100 population – according to Point Topic research. It says the UK’s figure of 34.75% at the end of 2011 is behind neighbours including France, Belgium and The Netherlands, but just ahead of Germany, Canada and the US.

But the UK ranks 31st in terms of the penetration of fibre-based services, a technology used to provide “superfast” services.

Bigger and brighter ‘supermoon’ graces the night sky

A “supermoon” has graced the skies, appearing bigger and brighter than usual, as it comes closer to the Earth – and is likely to bring higher tides.

The phenomenon, known as a perigee full moon, means the Moon appears up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than when it is furthest from the planet.

The optimum effect was seen – cloud permitting – at 04:30 BST (03:30 GMT).

The Royal Astronomical Society’s Dr Robert Massey said the Moon’s size may be more obvious than its brightness.

“The eye is so good at compensating for changes in brightness that you simply don’t notice (that element) so much,” he said.

When the Moon appears at its biggest it will be just 356,400km (221,457 miles) away, compared to its usual distance from Earth of 384,000km (238,606 miles).

Supermoon
The supermoon is seen rising behind statues at the St Isaac’s Cathedral in St Petersburg, Russia.

Dr Massey said: “When the Moon is closest to the Earth and full or new, you get an increase in the tidal pull in the ocean because the gravity of the moon and the sun line up.”

He added: “The Moon is always beautiful and a full moon is always dramatic.”

Scientists have dismissed the idea the perigee could cause strange behaviour – like lycanthropy – or natural disasters.

The Moon’s distance from Earth varies because it follows an elliptical orbit instead of a circular one.
